Tell me what you think

Since 2006 I have had the honor of representing all Hillsborough County children and voters...I created this blog in 2007 and have welcomed the opportunity for feed back throughout my term.

I am now a candidate for re-election and I need your help. Visit my website at http://www.voteapril.com/ .

I still want your input. If you think something is wrong, then tell me how it can be better. If you have information that would help our children, employees, or taxpayers, this is the place to share.

Please also note that this is my personal blog, not the board's. Furthermore, the opinions expressed by posters on this blog may or may not necessarily reflect my opinions or those of the School Board.

Again, if you want to follow my campaign you can go to http://www.voteapril.com .

You can also write me at april@voteapril.com or call 813-417-1102 .

At your service,

April Griffin,
Hillsborough County School Board Member, and Candidate

New Florida State Sunshine Standards

I just got back from the State DOE instructional materials selection committee meeting in Orlando. I am exhausted from 3 grueling days of mind numbing yet intense work. Our committee worked hard and took our job to heart. I am excited about the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Mathematics.

I am looking forward to hearing from math teachers about your opinion of the new standards.

NOT about new Math SSS.

April-- You MUST speak out regarding our lack of focus on vocational schools/programs! You ran on this platform and we are disappointed at the lack of progress. Despite what all the Springboard folks sell you (like down the river...)students are NOT all going to college! We MUST prepare them for life(and earning a living at a trade or career) earlier than the last semester of their SENIOR year!Education is not just for the college-bound. PLease, get us back to the basics. Students should be taught what they need for survival after high school. It's their right to expect that and our duty to prepare them for it.

Guess the math teachers are too exhausted from each and every grueling day of teaching 6/7 to check out the NFSSS nor do they have the time to write you a little note-- I'm sure they are busy revising and revamping their lesson plans --yet again. Hope you have recovered from the workshop by now.

Still haven't heard from the busy math teachers? A tough 3 day workshop does not even come close to the fatigue of teaching 6/7 everyday with no break since Labor day. Grading period 1 was 10 weeks and 2nd Grading period is 7--can't call them 9 weeks anymore. Gearing up to move the math curriculm from Springboard Lite (1 unit per grading period) to 3 or four units next year will have the math teachers just as fatigued as the English teachers who struggle to get it all done despite DOE testing mandates and student absences that have nothing to do with flu. Asked students lately what they think of Springboard? Maybe you should visit schools as well as attend workshops.
