Tell me what you think

Since 2006 I have had the honor of representing all Hillsborough County children and voters...I created this blog in 2007 and have welcomed the opportunity for feed back throughout my term.

I am now a candidate for re-election and I need your help. Visit my website at http://www.voteapril.com/ .

I still want your input. If you think something is wrong, then tell me how it can be better. If you have information that would help our children, employees, or taxpayers, this is the place to share.

Please also note that this is my personal blog, not the board's. Furthermore, the opinions expressed by posters on this blog may or may not necessarily reflect my opinions or those of the School Board.

Again, if you want to follow my campaign you can go to http://www.voteapril.com .

You can also write me at april@voteapril.com or call 813-417-1102 .

At your service,

April Griffin,
Hillsborough County School Board Member, and Candidate
District 6 (Countywide)

A new year begins smoothly

I went to bed the night before the first day of school worried about what could happen. Even with all of the changes we have made to improve on transportation problems of the past who knows what can happen.

Whew! The first day went off with hardly any glitches. I visited 5 schools and the first question I asked at each one was whether or not there were any busing issues. The answer was a resounding no.

I attribute the changes to much planning, dry runs before school started, communication improvements, and most importantly asking how we could change (and listening to the answers) from the people who are on the front lines; bus drivers, transportation workers, and parents.

You could also contribute the changes to a professional who was hired from outside the District.

A professional who was educated in the logistics of bus service and also had the necessary intelligence and wisdom to gather accurate data and interpret data and then devise a professionally developed plan to meet the needs of students, (parents represent the student's interest, right or wrong, nice or not nice, etc), bus drivers, and transportation workers.

How long wrong was the previous bussing system ran? Doubters can go back and read the reports that clearly forcasted the debacle that was coming.

There are plenty who cling to the belief that those who have paid their dues within the system deserve either continued status or advancement, despite their inability to adequately meet the needs of the students and staff.

In all areas.

Clinging on to a position without keeping up with technology, current knowledge and best practices is simply asking for failure.

I can hear Captain Kirk now.
