I recieved a question from someone about the relevance of my trip to DC on the students and teachers of Hillsborough County.
First of all the trip to Washington was a personal trip paid for by me out of my personal funds, just as this blog is supported and funded solely by me.
That being said, I came home from DC invigorated by the camaraderie of millions of people gathered together on a very cold morning to hear a message from our new President. Invigorated by the new era we were entering into.
The relevance is that we now have a new administration that has vowed to fund education appropriately. A new administration that has vowed to listen to educators before creating policies that will affect our schools. And being on the winning side of the past election gives a direct line of communication to this new administration. If you read the papers recently you would know that we just received 96 million dollars in additional federal dollars to fund areas that have been neglected by the past administration. Our Congresswoman Kathy Castor was responsible for this additional, much needed money. It is a new day in Washington and all government is connected. Part of my job is as an advocate at the federal and state level to bring funding for education programs back to Hillsborough County.
I also believe that the message of service and personal responsibility from our new President is one that is going to serve this nation and the world. It is a message our children need to hear. A message our teachers and employees need to hear. We have some very difficult times ahead and his message is one that does filter down to the local level.
I posted his speech without any additional comments because I felt his speech needed to stand alone.
Whether you supported President Obama or not, he is our President and there are going to be changes at the federal level that will affect us locally.
SOUND OFF AND BE HEARD You have a voice...use it. Share information to help Hillsborough County school children, school employees, and taxpayers.

Wish could have been there.
My students were mesmerized by the president's speech. Never have I seen them pay such close attention to anything.
It was historic. Something you will always remember.
Dont let the meanies bother you.
I am watching the Miss America pagent. :)
April, thank you for representing us (unofficially) in Washington. Wish I could have gone.
I voted for April, but not the current President. While I agree we are ready for an African American president, I would have much rather seen Colin Powell or somebody with more experience.
