Tell me what you think

Since 2006 I have had the honor of representing all Hillsborough County children and voters...I created this blog in 2007 and have welcomed the opportunity for feed back throughout my term.

I am now a candidate for re-election and I need your help. Visit my website at http://www.voteapril.com/ .

I still want your input. If you think something is wrong, then tell me how it can be better. If you have information that would help our children, employees, or taxpayers, this is the place to share.

Please also note that this is my personal blog, not the board's. Furthermore, the opinions expressed by posters on this blog may or may not necessarily reflect my opinions or those of the School Board.

Again, if you want to follow my campaign you can go to http://www.voteapril.com .

You can also write me at april@voteapril.com or call 813-417-1102 .

At your service,

April Griffin,
Hillsborough County School Board Member, and Candidate

The 2008 legislative session is over...finally

Here are some recaps of the bills the passed and the bills that didn't pass and a summary of the session in regard to education. And possible lawsuits in the future..remember the phrase "we will hold education harmless"? Looks like legislators forgot that one. Hillsborough County Public School's budget for the coming fiscal year is $43-million less that what we had this time last year.

Recently we announced plans to cut $15-million from our budget, with the cuts coming at the district level. We are doing everything in our power to not lay off our employees or have to cut pay like other school districts are proposing. We have been planning for this for the past two years and have a lot of work to do, but not as much as many other school districts.

We will do everything we can to avoid the drastic kinds of measures other districts are having to resort to.

So we should be ready to possible lose our job or get a pay cut... We should be notified as soon as possible so we can make plans. I thought in the superintendent’s letter that we weren’t going to lay people off. We were just going to leave vacancies unfilled.

To be honest, I would like to know if I am going to lose my job right away, not weeks from now. I have been teaching in this county for two years, and now I am in fear that I could be cut or put in a pool that sends me so far away from my home that I will never see my children because I live in Pasco... When will we know?

What is the likelihood of losing my job? What is the likelihood of getting a pay cut? If teachers take a pay cut or we resort to cutting pay, we better get rid of SpringBoard first. It’s almost 4 million a year. That would look really bad. How much would we save not having all those one-week trainings for employees over the summer? That will cost something like 3 million or more too. I am not even counting the hidden cost to run the show and the ridiculous pay for the “motivational” speakers.

Based on comments on this post I see I need to reiterate something.

It is the board's priority to not lay people off and not cut pay. Certain positions may not exist, but there will be a place in the district for our employees.

As a teacher in the county I am also nervous about my job. It is not a good time for anyone to be unemployed, but I feel fairly confident that the school board will find other ways to "trim fat" instead of cutting instructional positions or pay. I am completely disgusted with the state of Florida and our legislators. Education is obviously not important to those people in Tallahasse creating this chaos. My family needs my job April, and I'm confident that you will keep that a priority as you face some tough choices. I definitely don't envy you.
