Tell me what you think

Since 2006 I have had the honor of representing all Hillsborough County children and voters...I created this blog in 2007 and have welcomed the opportunity for feed back throughout my term.

I am now a candidate for re-election and I need your help. Visit my website at http://www.voteapril.com/ .

I still want your input. If you think something is wrong, then tell me how it can be better. If you have information that would help our children, employees, or taxpayers, this is the place to share.

Please also note that this is my personal blog, not the board's. Furthermore, the opinions expressed by posters on this blog may or may not necessarily reflect my opinions or those of the School Board.

Again, if you want to follow my campaign you can go to http://www.voteapril.com .

You can also write me at april@voteapril.com or call 813-417-1102 .

At your service,

April Griffin,
Hillsborough County School Board Member, and Candidate
District 6 (Countywide)

Coleman middle students care

...about the future of the environment. Coleman middle school students encouraged parents waiting in the pick up line not to idle while waiting for their children to be released from school.

As we restructure our transportation department and are not offering as much courtesy bussing more parents are driving their children to and from school. The unintended consequences of this is more cars in the pick up line in the afternoon.

What a great thing these kids are doing in getting people to think about the impact of sitting idling for 15 minutes to half an hour in front of the school every day.

Isn't this just addressing ONE symptom rather than THE cause?

Wouldn't
A)a return to neighborhood schools,
B)a reduction of special assignments,
C)the students agreeing to WALK to school,
D)the students agreeing to accept the responsibility for their own safety
E)the students buddying up with younger students for safety reasons,
F)the district working with the county and city in hiring more crossing guards with the money saved from NOT running buses,
G)providing more bike racks for students,
H)the district keeping this philosophy in mind when making decisions affecting schools,
I)students signing a "no-whining" pact with their parents when they tire of walking or riding to school,

actually DO more?
